Kitchen Colors: Do's and Don'ts
Molly Machmer-Wessels, designer at Woodland Design Company, suggests thinking of kitchens as "wraparound spaces." In a kitchen, so many details come together to form a great story. When choosing the colors for the walls in this space, he likes to bet on tones that complement other elements of the environment, such as cabinets, open shelves and countertops.
Don't choose a color until you define your intention for the space. How would you like to feel when you walk into your kitchen? Is your style clean, modern and direct? Maybe you have a warmer, more whimsical style and like to play with bright colors. If your goal is to make the kitchen rich and relaxing, dark tones may be the way to go. When you identify your intention, choosing a color becomes much easier.

Black is one of the most popular colors that both renters and homeowners consider for themselves.kitchen updates. If you're looking to give your closets a rich and sophisticated update, a smoky black like Sherwin Williams Black Fox is a great choice. "As a member of the charcoal family, Black Fox brings out the most earthy tones while remaining a dead neutral," says Joseph DeCasperis, a kitchen and bath designer in Southern California.
Done right, black can add a sophisticated and elegant touch to your kitchen. According to Andra DelMonico, Trendey's Principal Interior Designer, the color black works best in a modern or industrial kitchen when paired with materials like wood and concrete.

Highlyann Krasnow, creative director of The Design High, suggests navy if you're interested in going darker but aren't ready to commit to black. "We love navy kitchen cabinets with brass hardware," says Krasnow. Navy blue is a softer way to get a darker, more luxurious kitchen cabinet if you think black is too strong for your home.
Jennifer Guerin, owner of JG Color Studios, says that if you want to add a little color without completely compromising your cabinets, start by painting your kitchen island. A deep blue can also help hide shoe prints if your island doubles as a seating area.

"It's the color of life and nature, which makes it a perfect color for your kitchen," says DelMonico. You have many color options, from mint to sage, making this shade versatile. Plants are becoming increasingly popular in home décor because they add a tropical outdoor feel to your home. The color green can bring the same bright and cheery feel to your kitchen cabinets, giving them a fresh and inviting look.

While white and neutral colors may seem too traditional to some, "they often add a warm feeling to the space," says Machmer-Wessels. When she designs for clients, she often uses Benjamin Moore's Swiss coffee. Says this designer, "It's an incredibly warm white that goes perfectly with the white oak furniture. It's not too white and not too yellow. In fact, it's the perfect creamy shade." If you're interested in a lighter shade, consider Chantilly Lace from the same brand.
This particular shade is a crisp, clean white that feels like soft silk or linen. According to Tracy Sauer of Spray It Like New Kitchens, the undertone is a very soft, subtle hue that complements the hardwood floors and modern appliances. "Known as the purest white color, it tops the list of best-selling colors," says Sauer.

According to Thomas Vibe, interior designer and founder of Stone Wizards, gray is the perfect base color for a kitchen. "It's timeless and the most elegant option," he says. While gray seems safe, it's a neutral color that can be paired with just about any other color you might have in mind.
"However, I suggest using lavender for a modern take on basic gray, as its sweet, subtle hue makes your kitchen feel cozier," adds Vibe.

Yellow has a calming quality and is often associated with joy and happiness, a perfect way to set the tone for your home. "If you want positive spaces, choose a shade of yellow for your kitchen," says Karen Aronian of Aronian Education Design. Deciding to paint your kitchen yellow will give you and your family an energetic and joyful start to the day. Yellow can not only enhance the appearance of your space, but also its atmosphere. "I love Benjamin Moore's Buttermilk," says designer Diana Weinstein. "Feels like sunlight and butter at the same time, a great choice for a kitchen." Soft creams with warmer undertones, like muslin, are warm and inviting without being overbearing. Weinsten also says that muslin is a great transition color that blends beautifully with other colors.
Additional Kitchen Color Tips
Color is a brilliant way to create intimacy, especially in spaces like a kitchen where people gather. When remodeling your kitchen, you want to have specific goals for the design. Chris Starks of Enrichen the Kitchen says that some of the best kitchen colors are the ones that work with your overall design scheme. When painting your cabinets, be sure to use a quality primer. As a result, the paint adheres better and has a longer lifespan.
