I've seen a lot of people get confused about these construction adhesives, so I finally decided to write a comprehensive post about them. The choice between Permatex and Loctite can be a close one, as both general purpose adhesives are promoted for their heavy-duty applications.
Threadlockers and sealants are an essential part of the automotive, manufacturing and repair industries. They prevent loose connections and leaks, ensuring the life and integrity of the machine. But choosing the right product can be a daunting task, especially when there are so many options on the market.
What is the difference between a thread lock and a sealant?
Threadlockers and sealants are two adhesive products that are used for different purposes.
Threadlocks prevent loosening of threaded couplings due to vibration or external force. It is suitable for screws, nuts, bolts or other threaded fasteners. The connection created by the screw locks is strong and long lasting. Depending on the application, thread securing alternatives of different strengths are available.
A sealant is an adhesive that seals two surfaces to prevent liquid or gas leakage. It is used in plumbing, car engines and construction. It can be applied to metal, plastic and rubber surfaces. It is available in liquid, paste or tape form for a variety of sealing applications in low or high pressure environments.
Deciding on the best thread lock or sealant can be difficult. In this article we will compare two popular brands, Permatex and Loctite. We'll examine their features, pros, and cons to help you make an informed decision. Let's start.
Adhesives such as Permatex and Loctite
Today we are going to take a look at these two brands of deadbolt locksiThread sealing. The same products that are usually found here are:

A bit of trivia:Loctite bought Permatex in 1972 and sold it around 2000. Currently, Permatex is owned by Illinois Tool Works - the same company that owns ithobart and millsWelders, Tapcon fasteners and more.

Both brands of threadlocking products are almost identical. "Almost" means you won't notice any significant difference from normal use. they both areBlue thread lock that prevents screws, nuts and bolts from loosening due to vibration or other factors.
However, there are two small details.
#1 Gel Blue Threadlocker
Permatex hasTip gel twistthread locking as 24010Ideal for use in high vibration environments. The gel formula ensures that the thread stays in place, preventing drips and stains.
This product is identical to 242 products of both brands. However, it introduces two improvements:
Works with larger screws: 1/4" to 1".
Its favorable gel-based structure facilitates application (especially vertically).
#2 Difference in installation time
Permatex is a bit slow compared to constant time, takes about 20 minutes to cure compared to 15 minutes for Loctite 242. Both are fully cured after 24 hours. Permatex is also known for its higher viscosity, which makes it more suitable for larger gaps and rougher surfaces. Loctite 242, on the other hand, is known for its versatility and ability to work with a wider range of materials.

It makes the fasteners stronger and does not require a thorough cleaning of the threads beforehand.

Same color scheme and Threadlocker Hold
So is Permatex thread lock as good as Loctite? Permatex and Loctite thread lockshave similar properties.They even share the same color scheme when it comes to thread lock strength/holding power:
- purple for low intensity
- blue is of medium intensity
- Red indicates high (sustained) power

Thread sealants: Permatex 565221 and Loctite 565
Two favorites among plumbers and mechanics – but not only them. You'll need both for a variety of pipe/fitting sealing jobs, from waste management to hydraulic lines, brake connections, air conditioning...
Let's be honest: they're actually the same thing.
Both thread locking products are suitable for any NPT (National Pipe Thread) up to 2 inches - 5 cm for those using the metric system.
Moreover, both are under pressureUp to 10,000 psi.
Surprise, surprise - Both have a temperature range of -65°F to 300°F.
I mean, if you prefer a certain brand, go ahead and buy what makes you feel better. Even the pipes have the same design.
It is important that there are no leaks. It is also good for applying nuts and bolts that will not rust/corrode after use.

Loctite 518 vs. Permatex 5183 Sealant Manufacturers: Shades
Okay, more variety is worth mentioning this time. I had to search the official Henkel website to find it, the bread and butter of a multi-billion dollar company.
A small difference between this Loctite and its 5183 counterpart is the gap support:
Loctite 518 fills gaps up to 0.25 mm (0.01 in.), doc Permatex 5183Go wider with support for spacing up to 0.38 mm (0.015 inch).
Both are anaerobic gasket/flange sealant manufacturers. You will use them with metal parts and machinery. Aluminum, iron, steel – whenever you need a quick repair, you can use them.
You may have noticed that Loctite 518 is hard to find - both in stores and online...
A more convenient alternative isLoctite 515.Works in most cases, but with two caveats.
First, it's too smallaluminumflange. Second, it solidifies faster so it can harden faster than the other two with more reactive metals such as brass.
