Sewing Waterproof Fabric: A Basic Step-by-Step Guide

Waterproof fabrics are used in a variety of applications, including outdoor furniture, tents and awnings, and sports equipment. On the other hand, waterproof elements are only as good as the seams used in their construction. It's a little comforting to have something made of waterproof fabric if the seams don't seal properly. Water-repellent fabrics that are frequently exposed to the weather should be sewn with flat seams and UV-coated threads to prevent fading.

If you are sewing clothing or other types of waterproof outdoor items, the following step-by-step instructions will help you get the job done right.

Required supplies:

• A waterproof fabric such as Gore-tex cut to the exact dimensions of the design (the pattern is chosen by the user since there are so many things made of waterproof fabric.)
• Thread treated with UV protection (thread tends to deteriorate faster than waterproof fabric, so this will make the item more durable.)

Steps for sewing waterproof fabric:

1. Sew the tarp sections with UV resistant thread using the medium straight needle on the sewing machine set to the medium straight needle. Using a 5/8" seam allowance, sew the fabric in the opposite direction of the normal seam
2. To do this, sew 5/8" in from the raw edge of the fabric. Use small scissors to trim the raw seam edge 1/4" from the seam line on one side, then repeat on the other side. If you're sewing a light, fine-weave fabric, go to Step 7: Sew 1/8" from the original seam line to finish the job. This will stretch the seams further when using lightweight fabrics.

Since straight seams should not leak, adhering to these basic standards will result in tight, leak-proof seams on most waterproof fabrics. You may find that using a sewing machine is the most convenient option when it comes to sewing this tough fabric. After choosing the most appropriate thread, needle, foot and stitch type for your project, the canvas is fed into the sewing machine to produce a strong, long-lasting stitch that can withstand multiple washes. • Using tape allows for a more perfect seam since you don't have to pull the stitches out. For example, using seam tape that is half the width of the seam (0.5 in./1.3 cm) can save time and effort. Before you start sewing, carefully remove the backing tape from the two fabrics so they can be stuck together.

• Remember to do this twice so you don't sew all the way to the middle of the seam area. If you feel comfortable with a sewing machine, feel free to run the fabric through the machine at a higher speed.

6 Turn the fabric over and place it on the bottom of the machine. Turn the sewing material 180 degrees so that the other end of the seam is attached to the sewing machine. Move the needle so that it is about 0.125 inches (0.32 cm) from the unstitched side on the other side of the seam.

• In its final state, the overlapping stitch appears as two parallel stitches side by side

7 Sew the fabric approx. 0.32 cm from the other side and sew it. Pass the fabric through the machine a second time, this time keeping the needle as straight as possible. Go all the way to the other end of the stitch and make a parallel line that matches the previous row of stitches.

• When you have finished sewing these seams, remove the canvas from the sewing machine

8 Cut the excess thread from the material with scissors. Take a pair of scissors and cut off any excess thread stuck in the seams of the garment. Cut the thread carefully so you don't accidentally loosen the sewn seam during the thread cutting process.

4 Insert the overlapping pieces of fabric into the sewing machine. To join two pieces of canvas, join them with simple stitches.

As you go, remove the pins and continue sewing until you reach the other end of the fabric on the other side of the pin. To finish the seam, use scissors to cut off any excess fabric that has gathered around the seam after sewing.

• If you have a lot of excess thread, you can cut it off with scissors or the thread cutter built into the machine

5 Use your fingers to fold the fabric over the seam and push it down to create a pleat at the seam. Place the rightmost piece of quilted fabric on top of the leftmost piece of quilted fabric and flip it over so that it lines up with the other quilted fabric. Make sure the folded fabric covers the side of the slit, then press along the edge of the folded fabric to create another layer over the seam.

• This is often referred to as the "back end" of the project. Using a cloth to press the overlapping seams can make the overlapping seams appear folded in the finished project.

Turn the canvas over so you can work on the front side of the canvas. Observe the now visible seams along the seam and make sure the edge of the cut fabric is pointing in the direction of the seam. In this step, check that the sewn fabric is still folded in half and not spread out on the table. 7 Fold the fabric over the seam and push it into place. The folded part of the canvas must be moved to the left so that it covers the previously exposed seam. Fold the material in half, then run two fingers down the newly folded edge to hold it in place and highlight the folded seam in the middle.

• To achieve this effect, both sides of the canvas must be spread out so that both fabrics look like an open book.

8 Sew the edges of the seams that have just been folded over. When you take the newly folded canvas to the sewing machine, be sure to insert the needle inside the edge of the new seam. Pull the fabric straight through the machine, sewing along the seam as it goes. Continue sewing until you reach the edge of the folded seam, which should be about halfway.

• You should be able to see a parallel seam along the edge of the seam

9 Sew along the edge of the seam on the other side of the fabric. Turn the canvas 180 degrees, then place a sewing needle along the other side of the folded scene to create a seam. Draw a line in a straight line along the canvas as you move the needle along the canvas. Continue sewing until you reach the other end of the seam on the other side. At this point, double check that the edge has two parallel stitches.

• For those new to sewing machines, take your time and do things at your own pace. If you look closely, the seam should look like a folded piece of fabric along the center of the canvas section.

10 Remove any loose threads hanging from the canvas. Cut the thread hanging from the ends of the seam with sharp scissors. Cut the thread carefully to avoid unraveling the seam and ensure that the stitched fabric remains strong.
